Navy divers last night recovered a car from the River Lee in Cork City which it was believed contained the body of an elderly man.

The car entered the river around 8.30 p.m. at Horgan's Quay and was swept downstream for about 50 yards before sinking.

The search operation was hampered by the fact that the car sank beneath a stationary barge which had to be moved before a hoist could be attached to the car.
