The first woman president of the District Court took office following a swearing in ceremony at the Supreme Court in Dublin today.

Judge Miriam Malone, from Dublin, was declared president in the presence of the Chief Justice Mr Justice John Murray.

Judge Malone is married with two children and was educated in UCD and the Kings Inns.

She practised as a barrister in Dublin and dealt mainly with criminal matters and civil cases. She was appointed a judge of the District Court in March 1997 and worked across all areas of work associated with the court.

As president she will be in charge of the organisation of 54 judges in 45 districts across the country.
