Western diplomats and relatives today entered the detention centre in Kabul where eight foreign aid workers have been held by the Taliban since early August on charges of spreading Christianity.

A reporter said the three diplomats and two parents of American detainees were accompanied into the centre by officials of the hardline Islamic Taliban movement.

The Taliban initially refused any outside access to the eight foreign staff from the German-based Christian aid group Shelter Now International - four Germans, two Americans and two Australians.

But the Taliban said on Saturday visits would now be allowed and issued visas to the diplomats and relatives earlier on Monday, allowing them to fly from Pakistan to Kabul for the meeting.

Converting from Islam or encouraging conversion can carry the death sentence, although the punishment will be decided by Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar.
