Kazzia (14-1) ran out a tremendously game winner of the Sagitta 1000 Guineas for Godolphin at Newmarket today.

Frankie Dettori's mount led virtually all the way in the fillies' Classic and dug deep in the final furlong to deny outsider Snowfire (28-1) by a neck having looked likely at one stage to be swallowed up by John Dunlop's runner.

Sir Michael Stoute's Alasha (6-1), who also raced prominently, was a further neck back in third.

A delighted Dettori exclaimed: "She's a bit feminine but she's very tough!"

Hot favourite Gossamer, backed down to 11-8 at the off, was out the back under Jamie Spencer in the early stages and found disappointingly little when she was asked to pick up two furlongs from home.

Kazzia was giving Godolphin and Dettori only their second success in the famous race, following the triumph of Cape Verdi in 1998.

She had been thought of as the Dubai organisation's second string behind Silent Honor, but came to the fore following an injury to that filly.

Winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: ''She's tough and worked nicely so we decided to run her in the Guineas.

"She came back to our stable in November and was a bit weak and skinny but when she put on some muscles and some weight she showed from February that she looked like a Guineas filly.

"We gave the fillies the chance to show in the trials and since Silent Honor had a problem we decided to run this one.

Dettori went on: ''She didn't have the best trip back from Dubai and it was always ifs and buts as to whether she was going to run.

"The team have done a great job to get her back in one piece and I knew she would stay. Basically from the three I said 'come on, let's go - come and get me'.

"My filly stays beyond a mile and I knew if it came to a battle I would battle them out of it."
