"It's easy to make a difference" was designed to raise consumer awareness of simple steps to improve the environment.
Four leading supermarket chains - Tesco, Superquinn, Dunnes and SuperValu - are participating in the awareness campaign in 300 Irish outlets.
In-store advertising and leaflets will give shoppers easy access to environmental information on products.
Glass bottles - which can be recycled - will be promoted rather than plastic bottles which end up in landfills.
The "Attitudes and Actions" survey last year found only 42 per cent of Irish shoppers pay attention to labelling on goods when buying. Thirty-one per cent noticed the amount of packaging used.
This stage of the campaign will focus on three main points:
- Plastic bags: consumers will be encouraged to use reusable bags;
- Excess packaging: buying products with minimum packaging will be promoted. Use of refills and buying loose fruit and vegtables will be be urged;
- Recycling: recycled products like paper will be promoted.
