The man killed when he was struck by a lorry while making deliveries to a petrol station has been named as Mr Robert Higgins of Tubereen, Clonakilty, Co Cork.

He was 52 years old and married with three children.

He died yesterday after an articulated truck carrying sugar beet careered off the road and crashed into petrol pumps on the forecourt of a bar at Ballineen on the Bandon to Dunmanway road.

Local fire officers said the incident could have been much worse with petrol leaking across the forecourt and road. The road was closed for five hours while foam was spread to prevent the possibility of fire.
