The European Commission believes there could be a slight delay in the acceleration of European GDP growth this year compared with the forecast it made in spring, a spokesman said.

Mr Gerassimos Thomas said this weekend's EU finance ministers and eurogroup discussions on the economy will be on the basis of the commission's spring forecast.

The commission has no new figure for the EU or euro group, but since the spring forecast, "there have been new elements," he said.

On April 24th in its spring forecast, the commission put the euro zone's GDP growth at 1.4 per cent in 2002 and at 2.9 per cent in 2003.
