Clare County Council is expected to make a decision early next month on plans for a scaled-down visitor facility on the site of the controversial interpretative centre proposed for Mullaghmore, in the Burren, writes Frank McDonald.

An Taisce, the Burren Action Group and other objectors are urging councillors to vote against the scheme, claiming it is a "material contravention" of the Clare county development plan. For planning permission to be granted, three-quarters of the 32 members of the council must vote in favour.

If the scheme is refused, objectors are hoping that the Government will reinstate the Mullaghmore site and proceed with plans for national park offices in Corofin and an upgraded interpretative centre in Kilfenora.
