Northampton scrum-half Matt Dawson has been recalled to England's 27-man squad for the Six Nations match with Wales at Twickenham.

Dawson was dropped after skippering England to defeat in Ireland last October, a final-day loss that ended hopes of a Grand Slam for the third successive year.

The two-time British and Irish Lion then suffered a nasty shoulder injury on club duty and has only just returned to action.

However, he was outstanding during Northhampton's 38-7 Cup semi-final win over Newcastle last weekend, and has been handed an immediate recall by England manager Clive Woodward.

Fellow Northampton player John Leslie has earned a recall to the Scotland squad for their with France at Murrayfield.

Coach Ian McGeechan has otherwise given a vote of confidence to the players who were beaten 43-22 by Ireland last time out.
