Date for Cork by-election set

The Government has set Thursday, October 22nd, for the Cork South Central by-election

The Government has set Thursday, October 22nd, for the Cork South Central by-election. Expecting Fine Gael to move the writ when the Dail resumes after the summer re cess today, the Cabinet opted for the shortest possible period of a three-week campaign.

A Fine Gael spokesman said last night that Mr John Bruton would make a decision this morning on moving the writ for the seat.

Fine Gael has selected Mr Simon Coveney, Fianna Fail has selected Ms Sinead Behan, Mr Toddy O'Sullivan will contest the seat for Labour, and Mr Dan Boyle has been selected for the Green Party. Democratic Left will not be putting forward a candidate.
