Last September, Dublin choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan's Fragile in the Civic Theatre, Tallaght, proved to be the dance hit of 1999. This year he has choreographed for his Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre a tale of two suburban families titled The Flowerbed. By turns hilarious and brutally tragic, the piece charts the families' descent into violent conflict and mutual destruction. With new music by Philip Feeney and designs by Rodney Grant, this dance work about forbidden love, illicit sex, drugs, greed, shopping and gardening has been specially commissioned by the Project. It features world class dancers: Dubliner Mick Dolan (right, unrelated to the choreographer, though both received Arts Council bursaries the same year), Alex Leonhartsberger from Tanz Theater, Vienna, Simon Rice from the Royal Ballet, Rachel Lopez de la Nieta, who will be remembered as the angel in Fragile, Bernadette Iglich from Pina Bausch company and Jarrko Lehmus from the UK National Youth Dance.
