Cyprus's all-party National Council decided yesterday against deploying controversial ground-to-air missiles on the island, the President, Mr Glafkos Clerides, said yesterday.

"I have arrived at the decision for non-deployment in Cyprus and I have agreed that we should begin negotiations with the Russian government for possible deployment in [the Greek island of] Crete," he said.

"In taking this decision I took seriously into account the position of the Greek government," he said.
