Cycle group says Bike to Work Day a success

Cycling Ireland is calling today¿s Bike to Work Day a success.

According to the chief executive of Cycling Ireland, Mr Eamonn Duffy, the day was a great success with a huge amount of people choosing to cycle to work.

The day - part of the Hibernian National Bike Week, which runs until September 8th - is an attempt to promote the benefits of cycling to work and encourage more people to cycle.

Mr Duffy said the day will be a "shared learning experience between cyclists and motorists". He said that instead of being each others "enemies", he hoped cyclists and motorists could learn to share the roads.

Mr Duffy also called for a "better and fruitful relationship" between Cycling Ireland and the Dublin Transport Office (DTO) - especially in the areas of design and introducton of cycling networks.

Cycling Ireland has 27,000 registered members participating in the week.

But Ms Ruth Kelly of AA roadwatch, while noting the adverse weather conditions, said she did not notice any increase in cyclists on the roads. She also said cars did not appear to be ceding any extra amount of space to cyclists.
