Custody for Ryanair hijack suspect extended

The man accused of planning to hijack a London-bound airliner last month has been ordered to be held in custody

The man accused of planning to hijack a London-bound airliner last month has been ordered to be held in custody. The Swedish prosecutor says he needs more time to file formal charges.

The court in Vaesteraas agreed to the prosecutor's request that Mr Kerim Chatty should remain in jail until September 30th on preliminary charges of planning to hijack a plane and illegal possession of a weapon.

The 29-year-old, whose father is Tunisian and mother is Swedish, attended the hearing.

Chief prosecutor Mr Thomas Haeggstroem says Mr Chatty still poses a risk of escaping, destroying evidence or complicating the investigation.

Mr Haeggstroem's office says more time is needed for the investigation because of a large number of witnesses and other measures.

Mr Chatty was arrested at Vaesteraas airport last month after security officials found a gun in his carry-on luggage. He was preparing to board a Ryanair flight to Stansted before travelling on to an Islamic conference in Birmingham.

Mr Chatty has admitted to illegal possession of a weapon, but his lawyer Nils Uggla says that is not enough to keep him in jail.

"Kerim Chatty denies that he in involved in any form of hijack. He demands to be set free," Mr Uggla said.
