Bujumbura - The authorities in Burundi imposed a night-time curfew on the capital yesterday, after more than a week of attacks by rebels of the Hutu extremist National Liberation Forces (FNL) in Bujumbura.

Almost 40 civilians and soldiers died when the rebels started a series of attacks on the capital a week ago, capturing the Kinama district in the north of the city. Fighting continued yesterday as FNL fighters fired mortars into the neighbouring district of Ngagara, where at least five people have been killed in the last four days, according to witnesses.
