Leeds - Hundreds of people fought with riot police last night on the streets of Leeds, northern England, after crowds set alight cars and threw bricks at officers. A large group of Asians charged towards police hurling bottles, rubble and plastic crates. A shop and cars were set on fire. One man received facial injuries. The trouble was sparked by the arrest of a man from the local Asian community two days ago.

A resident who did not want to be named said: "The police took this man, they arrested him, kicked him and sprayed CS gas at him in front of Asian people. And that's why it started tonight. It is not a racist attack, this is because of police inaction."
