A motorist who unlawfully fitted a speed trap detector to his Porsche has been spared a criminal conviction after paying €150 to charity.
Audrius Karosas (35), with an address at Rosedale Crescent, Clonee, Dublin did not know it was illegal to use the device which can tell if speed detection equipment is in operation.
He pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to breaking speed meter detection regulations under the Road Traffic Act.
Garda Simon English told Judge John King that he was operating a checkpoint at Corduff Road, Blanchardstown on May 14th last year.
Mr Karosas, a Lithuanian national who has lived in Ireland for 12 years, had the device on the windscreen of his Porsche Boxster and admitted it was a speed camera detection device, Gda English said.
Defence Paul Fitzpatrick said the defendant thought it was legal and it was not an offence in Lithuania to use the device.
He asked the judge to note that Mr Karosas, who is a carpenter, had no previous convictions and would be willing to donate money to charity.
Judge King struck out the case after Mr Karosa came back to court with €150 to be given to St Vincent de Paul.
