DPP directions awaited over criminal damage to Taoiseach’s office

Judge Mary Devins at Castlebar District Court describes situation as ‘most bizarre’

Directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions are still awaited in the case of a Co Mayo man charged with causing criminal damage to Taoiseach Enda Kenny's constituency office in Castlebar.

Liam Heffernan (30), from Kilnageer, Belcarra, Castlebar, is also charged with failure to comply with the instructions of a garda and being intoxicated at the office in Tucker Street on December 13th, 2014.

When Mr Heffernan appeared before Judge Mary Devins at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday, Insp Mandy Gaynor told the court instructions from the DPP are still awaited.

Judge Devins described the situation as “most bizarre”.

She said she had never come across a case before as to whether there should be charges or not.

The judge granted one further remand to March 18th.

The accused was granted legal aid at the request of his solicitor.
