A day of recounts has seen Co Monaghan-based Fine Gael TD Mr Seymour Crawford retain his street but the result in Cork South Central may not now be known until tomorrow.

Mr Crawford has retained his street by 141 votes from his party colleague Mr Andrew Boylan following an eleven-hour recount in the constituency.

In Cork South Central, all the 55,784 ballots have now been counted and the returning officer and legal representatives for Fianna Fáil’s Mr John Dennehy and independent candidate Ms Kathy Sinnott are examining a series of disputed ballot papers.

Last night, Mr Dennehy was given 8,791 votes compared with 8,789 for Ms Sinnott, who immediately called for another recount.

Both candidates are confident the recount is going their way. The first count gave Ms Sinnott a three-vote victory before yesterday’s recount gave the seat to Mr Dennehy by a margin of two votes.

The feeling at the count centre is that there may be a further overnight adjournment before the final outcome is known.

In Wicklow, where Labour’s Mr Nicky Kelly is hoping to take the last seat from independent Ms Mildred Fox, the recount has been adjourned until Thursday.
