The Medical Council's Fitness to Practise committee is to begin a disciplinary examination of the role of doctors criticised in the Finlay report of the hepatitis C tribunal of inquiry.

Mr Justice Finlay found that Dr Jack O'Riordan, a former BTSB national director, bears most of the responsibility for the infection which occurred in the mid-1970s.

Dr Terry Walsh, who took over from Dr O'Riordan, was reported to be in neglect of his duty by failing to recommend against using the plasma of the woman known as patient X when it was discovered she had jaundice and hepatitis.

Dr James Kirrane was criticised for not pressing for an investigation when he was told of patients in 1997 who had developed jaundice after receiving infected anti-D.
