A club doorman has been sentenced to one year in prison for assault in Cork Circuit Criminal Court today.

Neville Barry (36) was found guilty of assaulting an American customer at a Cork lap-dancing club by breaking his leg in two places.

The attack, which took place in August 2001, left Mr Glen Novak incapacitated for nine months.

The court heard that Mr Kovak was with two friends at Lapello's club, and was assaulted after he tried to prevent one of his friends being manhandled by a bouncer.

He was given a black eye by Barry, who then went on to stamp on his left leg, breaking it in two places.

The court was told that the assault on Mr Kovak was a once-off offence and that Barry - who had come to Cork five years ago from Birmingham and who has a four-year-old child - was unlikely to reoffend.

Barry was sentenced to 18 months, six months of which were suspended.
