Scientists can watch as cells carry out biochemical activities by splicing genes that produce fluorescent proteins into the cell's DNA. So far they have only been able to work with green, yellow, blue and cyan fluorescent protein, but Russian scientists have isolated six new ones from a coral reef in the Pacific, the authors write in Nature Biotechnology. Among the new versions is a red protein, which will open up new opportunities to observe how cells operate.
