Dublin Corporation has published the first list of persons and companies successfully prosecuted under the Litter Pollution Act 1997 in a "name-and-shame" policy.
The city council at a meeting on April 2nd last decided to issue the names and addresses of those convicted. Fines and costs of up to £600 were awarded to the corporation in each case.
Two of the 31 names on the list (published in full in an advertisement on page 12) occur twice, indicating convictions for separate offences.
The Labour councillor, Mr Kevin Humphreys, who proposed the "name-and-shame" policy, last night welcomed the move and said he believed it would bring about a public awareness that littering was no longer acceptable.
"A name-and-shame policy will greatly assist Litter Wardens carrying out their duties and it will not take long for people to realise that littering is unacceptable," he said.
