Contract worker dies in accident at Limerick factory

Mr Conor McGeough (22) was originally from Derry Park, Crumlin, Dublin. He was working for the family company, Air Inspection Services, at the Analog Devices plant in Raheen Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Limerick.

He was part of a team of outside contract workers carrying out scheduled maintenance work in one section of the plant.

Mr McGeough had been wearing a mask over his mouth and special clothing as part of his normal work duties. It is understood he had been cleaning out the inside of an extraction duct when colleagues saw that he was in distress and pulled him out.

He was taken to the nearby Mid-Western Regional Hospital where he died shortly before tea-time on Thursday. A post-mortem was due to be carried out yesterday.

The Health and Safety Authority and gardaí at Roxboro Road in Limerick have launched investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, in a statement, management at Analog Devices, extended sympathies to the family and friends of Mr McGeough following the tragedy.

"The management and staff of Analog Devices is deeply saddened by this tragedy and we are working closely with all relevant authorities as a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this young man's death is conducted. Analog Devices wishes to express sincere condolences to the family and friends of the young man."

Analog Devices, which has been based in Limerick since 1976, employs more than 1,200 people at the facility where it manufactures integrated circuits.
