Primark recalls three types of men’s flip flops over carcinogen

Products failed to meet the retailer’s ‘usual high standards for chemical compliance’

Primark has recalled three types of men's flip flops sold in Northern Ireland after finding high levels of a restricted substance.

According to a spokesman, the chemical used was chrysene which poses risks of cancer and is commonly found in dark-coloured dyes.

In a statement on its website, Primark said levels of the chemical did not meet its “usual high standards for chemical compliance.”

The company added that levels were “in excess of the 1.0 mg/kg requirement”. However, health and safety risks to customers were minimal.

The flip flops were on sale from January 4th to June 2nd and the fault was discovered by Primark following an enquiry by a third party.

Primark said it tested all the flip flops in this style made by the factory, which were part of the Cedar Wood State range, and “all affected items have been removed from sale. Three colours from this style have passed the test and will remain on sale.”

The company advised customers to return the products to any Primark store where they will be offered a full refund. Proof of purchase is not required.

The spokesman noted that there was no recall for these products in stores in the Republic of Ireland, which trade under the name Penneys. However, along with the UK, recalls were issued for stores in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Belgium. A “thorough investigation” is underway.
