Seventeen conservation projects have been short-listed for the annual ESB/Conservation Volunteers Ireland Community Environment Awards.

Prof David Bellamy will announce the winners on September 23rd at a reception in Dublin.

The projects are: River Licky management plan, Rusheen, Old Parish, Co Waterford; Rusheen bird sanctuary, Co Galway;HOPE project, Straffan, Co Kildare; Glinsk - Beyond 2002, Glinsk, Co Galway; Portumna Castle crafts and garden, Portumna, Co Galway; "Streamscapes", Bantry, Co Cork;

Shangan neighbourhood recycling and composting centre, Ballymun, Dublin; the Neale - a heritage village, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo; seed propagation composting and recycling project, New Ross, Co Wexford; "Our Dream Garden", James Street, Dublin; Moyaliff Wood natural habitat development, Clonmel, Co Tipperary; the organic walled garden, Donamon, Co Roscommon; steps and bridges, Drogheda, Co Louth;

Terenure 2002, Terenure, Dublin 6; Dromard Foróige recycling initiative, Co Longford; landmark feature at Foilhammerum, Valentia Island, Co Kerry; Tarbert Development Association - bird hide project, Tarbert, Co Kerry.

The overall winner will receive €3,200, the first in each of the four award categories will receive €1,905, €640 will be awarded to each commended project and local winners will receive €320 each. Award money must be spent on the development of the projects.
