Concerns have been expressed over the possible downgrading of Cobh Garda station as a district headquarters a decade after a new station was opened in the Co Cork town.

Former Cork East TD and current member of Cork County Council Cllr John Mulvihill said he was concerned Cobh was going to be downgraded as Garda district headquarters in an amalgamation with Midleton Garda station.

“Any such move is totally unacceptable to the people of Cobh – we’ve already lost Cobh District Court, which has been transferred to Midleton, and to transfer the Garda district headquarters from a state-of-the-art new station is just not on.”

Garda sources have pointed out the downgrading of Cobh’s status as a district headquarters is not included in the 2012 policing plan, and any such inclusion in next year’s plan would require Cabinet approval.
