Exit polls in Moldova's parliamentary election today showed president Vladimir Voronin's Communists set to win with 46 per cent of the vote and the largest opposition Liberal Democrats on 14 per cent.
The new parliament will vote for a president. Voronin, in office since 2001, cannot stand for a third consecutive term.
The Institute of Public Politics, a local umbrella of several thinktanks and polling organisations, said the Communists would have 56 seats in the 101-member legislature.
To ensure a large enough majority to choose their own presidential candidate, the Communists need 61 seats.
