THE STANDARDS in Public Office Commission has reserved the right to investigate former taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s tax affairs if the Revenue Commissioners decide against him.

In its annual report yesterday, the commission said it had decided that it “would not be appropriate for it to pursue the matter until the Revenue Commissioners had completed their consideration of Mr Ahern’s tax liabilities”.

However, the commission said it wrote to Mr Ahern informing him of its decision and also informed him that, in the event that the Revenue Commissioners make a determination in his case that he was not in compliance with his obligations, the commission may decide to consider the matter again at that stage.
