Haydn was at the heart of Alfred Brendel's last appearance at the National Concert Hall, in 1991, and it's Haydn who again will open his recital there, next Tuesday.

It will, in fact, be the same E flat major sonata as the last time (No 49 in Hoboken's catalogue), but thereafter the programmes diverge.

In 1991, Brendel offered more Haydn, followed by Liszt. This time, he'll be playing some minor-key Mozart (the Sonata in C minor, K457, and the Adagio in B minor), followed by the Sonata in A minor, D845, by Schubert, a composer of whom Brendel has long been one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking of advocates.

The recital begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are priced between £18£35.
