Darren Clarke declared himself "totally disgusted" by an opening 75, which included three bogeys in the last five holes, at the British Open today.

"I've been struggling all week and it certainly didn't get any better," he said. "I hardly hit a good shot. I was just terrible."

Tiger Woods made a poor start to his round by recording a triple-bogey seven at the par-four first after losing his ball.

The world number one pushed his tee shot right into thick rough and was unable to find the ball after the maximum five minutes allowed.

He trudged back to the tee and, playing his third shot, drove the ball into the same area of rough, from where he had to hack out across the fairway.

The 27-year-old then hit a fine approach to 20 feet - but two-putted for seven.

After 13 holes, Woods was three over par, six adrift of clubhouse leader South African Hennie Otto, who returned a three-under 68 having started in the first group of the day.

Otto conjured a marvellous chip at the first to save par after driving into the rough. He carded three birdies in four holes from the 10th to take the clubhouse lead despite dropping a shot at the last.

Greg Norman is also three under through 14 holes. He made a storming start with a birdie at the first and an eagle at the fourth.
