The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating claims that farmers in north Co Down are slaughtering hundreds of healthy new-born calves because they have no means of feeding them.

Local sources say that the calves are being shot as soon as they are born because farmers are running out of fodder and because of the ban on the movement of livestock.
