Two women have been arrested by Customs officers at Dublin airport for alleged cigarette smuggling.

Two women have been arrested by Customs officers at Dublin airport for alleged cigarette smuggling.

The two women, aged 28 and 29, arrived into Dublin Airport from Riga, Latvia today.

They were arrested and charged with being alleged evasion of excise duties, a statement from Revenue's customs service said.

They later appeared before Blanchardstown District Court.

Both were remanded on their own bail of €250.

They were ordered to sign on at Store Street Garda station each day and to surrender their passports.

They are due to appear again at Blanchardstown District Court at 10.30am on Thursday July 30th 2009, Revenue said.

In a separate operation at Dublin Airport today, customs officers seized 55,000 cigarettes and 23kgs of tobacco after they targeted a flight arriving from Abu Dhabi.

The cigarettes and tobacco are valued at €29,632 with a potential loss of revenue of €24,180.
