A former Christian Brother who sat on a boy while "thumping" him in St Josephs residential home in Galway has been fined £250 by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Paul Farrell (53), a teacher, of Kinvara Road, Cabra, Dublin, only stopped his assault on Mr Mark Shaughnessy when another person threatened him with a brush. Farrell had pleaded not guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, but his guilty plea to common assault was accepted by the State.
