The Chief Justice, Mr Justice John Murray, has extended the traditional formal welcome on behalf of the courts to the new Attorney General, Paul Gallagher. Mr Justice Murray, presiding over a seven-judge Supreme Court, welcomed the Attorney General at a brief ceremony in the Supreme Court.
The ceremony was attended by members of Mr Gallagher's family and members of the junior and senior Bar, including two predecessors, Eoghan Fitzsimons SC and John Rogers SC.
The Chief Justice said the role of the attorney general was crucial in respecting and vindicating the rights of the citizen. There was also a special role as constitutional adviser to the Government, with responsibility for drafting legislation and the conduct of civil litigation concerning the State.
Mr Gallagher thanked the Chief Justice and the court. He wished to acknowledge the "tremendously high standards" set by his predecessors, which provided great assistance and guidance to him in exercising his obligations.
