Chelsea secured their place back among the Champions League elite as Roman Abramovich took his summer spending to £100 million with the acquisition of Hernan Crespo.

The Argentina international forward, who cost an estimated £17 million, was introduced to the Stamford Bridge crowd at half-time during their Champions League final qualifying round tie against MSK Zilina.

The Blues, who already had a 2-0 lead from the first leg, made sure of victory with Glen Johnson and Robert Huth scoring their first senior goals, while Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also found the net.

Crespo had jogged around the Stamford Bridge pitch for almost an hour in the build-up to the club's Champions League final qualifying round tie against MSK Zilina.

When the half-time interval came, the Argentina international striker strode onto the pitch to be introduced to fervent applause.

Although a fee has not yet been officially revealed, 28-year-old Crespo - who passed a medical earlier today - is hoping to receive his international clearance in time for this weekend's game against Blackburn.

His arrival from Inter Milan comes hot on the heels of the capture of Russian midfielder Alexei Smertin from Bordeaux for £3.45million.

Chelsea's England centre-back John Terry hailed the arrival of Crespo, who followed eight players into Stamford Bridge as part of English football's biggest-ever spending spree following Abramovich's takeover.

Terry said: "The manager's made great signings and players like Juan Sebastian Veron and Crespo can only improve the other players.

"We've already got fantastic guys like Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - and the players think the signings are good competition. It's exciting times here and good for everybody."

Chelsea's Russian revolution began with the signings of Glen Johnson, Geremi, Damien Duff and Wayne Bridge.

They were followed by Joe Cole, who made his full debut tonight against Zilina, and Juan Sebastian Veron, with Adrian Mutu and then Smertin also joining the new-look squad.

While a final move for Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makalele may still also take place, Crespo offers the experienced finishing prowess which Chelsea will need and he will presumably partner Mutu in attack in the long-term.

However, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen, who both started against Zilina, as well as Mikael Forssell will also compete for places. The 28-year-old Argentina international - who watched last Saturday's 2-1 win against Leicester from the executive box at Stamford Bridge - will also be joining forces with compatriot Veron.

Crespo had been courted by Chelsea after their apparent interest in his former Inter team-mate Christian Vieri was rebuffed.
