FREETOWN - Sierra Leonean rebels, engaged in a civil war for the last five years, have agreed to a ceasefire and a summit between their leader and the west African country's head of state, the state radio announced yesterday.

Following talks with the military regime, rebels of the Revolutionary United Front agreed over the weekend "to a ceasefire with immediate effect", according to the broadcast.

The rebels have agreed to a summit between Brig General Julius Maada Bio, and the RUF lender, Corporal Foday Sankoh, before the end of March.
