Castlerea inmates 'unaccounted for'

Gardaí in Co Roscommon are continuing to investigate the disappearance of two prisoners from Castlerea Prison.

Gardaí in Co Roscommon are continuing to investigate the disappearance of two prisoners from Castlerea Prison.

The men were last seen at about 11.30pm last night.

An Irish Prison Service spokesman said they were noted as being "unaccounted for" at 6.30am. He said prison staff were searching the area.

The men, brothers in their 20s from Romania, were staying in the semi-open Grove House residential area which is a lower security unit within the confines of Castlerea Prison. It is understood they are being held on extradition warrants.

A Garda spokeswoman said a call was received from the prison at about 8.30am to report the escape.

Gardaí at Castlerea are investigating.
