Two armed raiders targeted a post office in Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary, yesterday and made off with a substantial sum of money.

The raiders, both described as in their 20s, entered the post office at approximately 10.15am and ordered staff to hand over cash.

The men were armed with a firearm, thought to be a sawn-off shotgun, and a hammer. After threatening staff, they made off down the village, where they jumped into a maroon saloon car and sped off in the direction of Nenagh.

Friday is traditionally one of the busiest days for the post office in Cloughjordan, with locals collecting their pensions.

Nenagh gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have seen anybody acting suspiciously in the area or may have information on the matter to contact them at 067-31333.
