Mr Derry Canty, a member of the Progressive Democrats since the party's inception, and a member of Cork County Council for almost 11 years, will announce today that he is to run as an independent candidate in the next general election. Mr Canty failed by a handful of votes at a Progressive Democrat selection convention in Cork last Sunday to win the nomination for Cork South Central. Mr Tom Coughlan, a former member of the Fianna Fail executive, was selected.
