Canadian-born Prof George Sayers Bain has been appointed vice-chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, reports Carmel Robinson.

Prof Bain (58) will succeed the present vice-chancellor, Sir Gordon Beveridge, on January 1st next. A distinguished academic, he is currently principal of the London Business School.

He has an international reputation in the field of labour relations, involving arbitration, conciliation and mediation. He has considerable experience of academic and administrative leadership and public service. He was recently appointed by the British government as chairman of the Low Pay Commission.

Mr Bain was awarded an MA in economics from the University of Manitoba in 1964 and a PhD in industrial relations by Oxford University in 1969.

Prof Bain said he was delighted: "The university makes a valuable and unique contribution to Northern Ireland and the wider community and I am looking forward to taking Lip my appointment."
