Canadian Finance Minister John Manley has pulled out of the race to become the next leader of the ruling Liberal Party after saying he had no chance against frontrunner Mr Paul Martin.

"Paul Martin will be the next leader of the Liberal Party and the next prime minister of Canada . . . he will have my unconditional support," Mr Manley told a nationally broadcast news conference.

He said he intended to stay on as finance minister.
