Cameras to clean up Ennis

A three-week closed-circuit television trial started in Ennis yesterday designed to capture litter louts on video

A three-week closed-circuit television trial started in Ennis yesterday designed to capture litter louts on video. This will allow Ennis UDC to take legal proceedings. In recent months there has been a renewed effort to clean up the streets of the town.

According to Ms Josephine Cotter Coughlan, administrative officer, Ennis UDC: "In recent years we have shown what can be achieved through co-operation in developing the town and getting the best out of everyone. This CCTV initiative is another such partnership led by the UDC with the Gardai and local businesses."

The system was placed in Enzo's fast-food outlet in Abbey Street, which will operate on a 24-hour basis to monitor litter problems and those littering.

The cathaoirleach of Ennis UDC, Cllr Peter Considine, said: "The litter problem needs to be addressed, not just in Ennis but across the country, and it is our opinion that this trial will certainly go a long way towards achieving our goal".
