Comments made by a judge earlier this week were contrary to incitement-to-hatred legislation, Ms Madeleine Taylor- Quinn (FG) contended. Judge Michael Connellan deserved to be censured by the Minister for Justice, Mr O'Donoghue, for his remarks at a court hearing in Newbridge, she said.

The Minister "should take action in relation to this individual, because I do believe that his comments were contrary to legislation passed in this House in relation to incitement to hatred and other related legislation of this nature".

Ms Taylor-Quinn asked the Leader of the House to convey her views to Mr O'Donoghue.

Responding to an intervention by the Cathaoirleach, Mr Brian Mullooly, who said there was a convention that the judiciary was not criticised in the House, Ms Taylor-Quinn said she believed occasions did arise when the House should be in a position to criticise judges when, in her view, they abused their position.
