British unemployment rose for the third month in a row in December, when the jobless total was put at 963,500 and the jobless rate at 3.2 per cent, official figures showed today.

A total of 3,200 people signed on to the benefits register in the month, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported.

The increase was less than the 7,300 jump economists here had been expecting.

The International Labour Organisation said that unemployment rose by 15,000 to 1.522 million in the three months to November.
