The British Foreign Office has said it is investigating unconfirmed reports that the three British hostages in the Gaza Strip have been released.

Sky News is reporting that Kate Burton, 24, and her parents Hugh, 73, and 55-year-old Helen - known as Win - have been freed and are on their way to Gaza City.

The hostages were abducted near the Palestinian border with Egypt on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier, the Palestinian General Delegate to the UK, Manuel Hassassian, said he believed security officers were close to making contact with the kidnappers.

Professor Hassassian told Channel 4 News: "There are, it seems, certain leads that will connect the security forces to talk to these people.

"I think they are close to getting in touch with them, but of course nobody can come out and say that we have a total lead on them, because if that is done it might have some negative repercussions.

"I assume that our security forces will clinch this deal very soon."
