Sixty-five people were killed after a bridge collapsed under the weight of a truck packed with passengers and merchandise in southeastern Guinea, a senior army official in the West African country said today.
The accident happened as the truck, packed with passengers and merchandise, was heading for a local market near the remote town of Gueckedou, more than 400 km (250 miles) southeast of the capital Conakry yesterday, the official said.
"There are 65 dead. A bridge collapsed under the weight of a truck carrying people who were on their way to a weekly market," the military officer, who asked not to be named, said.
French radio RFI said there were seven survivors.
