Brian Murphy inquest to resume next week

An inquest into the death of Dublin student Brian Murphy outside Club Anabel in 2000 is likely to be resumed next week.

An inquest into the death of Dublin student Brian Murphy outside Club Anabel in 2000 is likely to be resumed next week.

The inquest was adjourned pending the outcome of criminal trials in connection with Mr Murphy's death.

Last month, the State dropped proceedings against one of four men charged in connection with the events leading to the student's death. Dermot Laide from Co Monaghan had faced a retrial on a manslaughter charge, but the Director of Public Prosecutions decided not to proceed due to "evidential difficulties".

The former State Pathologist, Prof John Harbison, who did the original postmortem, was unable to give evidence due to illness.

However, Mr Laide claimed the real reason the prosecution was dropped was the emergence of a new report by the current State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, that appeared to conflict in some respects with the original postmortem report.

A spokeswoman for the Dublin Coroner's Court confirmed the inquest would be resumed next week but she was unable to provide further details.

The decision to proceed with such an inquest after the end of a criminal trial is at the discretion of the coroner.

It is believed the inquest into Brian Murphy's death will be mentioned next week at the Dublin City Coroner's Court and that a date for the full hearing may be set at that stage.
