Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy expects to sign Republic of Ireland star Gary Breen within the next 48 hours.
The defender is preparing to undergo a medical at the First Division club.
McCarthy, who knows Breen well from their time together with Ireland, has been keen to bring him in since the end of last season.
McCarthy added to his squad today with the signing of former Manchester City midfielder Jeff Whitley.
