A two-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital following an crash involving a car and two lorries on the N1 road near Gormanston in Co Meath.

The child was a passenger in a car travelling northwards when, close to the junction for Mosney, it collided with a lorry and the impact sent it into the path of another lorry.

The child; his mother, who was driving the car; and one of the lorry drivers were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The child was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin with life-threatening injuries.
